The Guide

A little help for those little teeth.

Kids don't come with an owner's manual. Here's the dental stuff parents actually want to know — without making it complicated.

Brushing by Age

0–1
No teeth yet? Still brush. Wipe gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. When the first tooth appears, brush it twice a day with a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste.
1–3
You brush, they watch. A rice-grain of fluoride toothpaste, twice a day. Tiny Teeth tip: sit your child on your lap facing away from you — it's easier to see and gentler for them.
4–6
Pea-sized, teamwork. Let them try first, then you finish the job — especially the back teeth, where cavities like to start.
7+
Almost solo. Most kids can brush on their own by 7–8, but a quick check afterward still helps until they're consistently doing it well.

Snacks & Drinks

  • Water is the hero. It rinses teeth and never causes cavities.
  • Juice is a sometimes treat. Keep it to 4 oz a day, with a meal — not sipped all afternoon.
  • Sticky beats sweet for damage. Gummies, fruit snacks and dried fruit cling to teeth longer than chocolate does.
  • No bottles or sippy cups in bed. Milk pooling on teeth overnight is a cavity recipe.

Cavity Prevention

  • Watch for white spots. Chalky white lines near the gumline are often the first sign — worth a call when you see one.
  • Regular checkups catch things early. Small problems stay small when we see them sooner.
  • Fluoride and sealants do heavy lifting. Both are quick, painless, and proven to prevent cavities.
  • Brush before bed — nothing after. The last brush of the day matters most.

Growing Teeth

First visit by the first tooth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by the first tooth's appearance (usually around 6 months) or by the first birthday — whichever comes first. Early visits are quick, easy, and build comfort long before any real work is needed.
Wiggly teeth are normal. Loose teeth around age 6 are a milestone, not an emergency — encourage wiggling, not yanking.
Adult teeth behind baby teeth? Usually fine. If the baby tooth isn't budging after the adult one is well in, we'll take a look.
Spacing is okay. Gaps in baby teeth are normal and often good — adult teeth are bigger and need the room.

"Uh-oh" Moments: Quick Parent Reference

Tooth knocked out (permanent tooth)
Hold it by the crown, don't scrub the root. Try to reseat it, or keep it in milk, and call us immediately — time matters.
Toothache
Rinse with warm water, floss gently to check for trapped food, and a cold compress on the cheek for swelling. Call us if it lasts more than a day.
Chipped or broken tooth
Save any pieces in milk, rinse the mouth with warm water, and call us — even if it looks minor.
Bumped tooth, no damage
Watch it for a few days. If it darkens or your child complains it hurts, have us take a look.

Not sure if it's an emergency? Call us at (516) 272-4450 — we'd rather you ask than worry.

Easy Daily Wins

  • Brush twice a day — morning and right before bed.
  • Water after snacks instead of juice or milk.
  • Let your child pick their own brush — buy-in beats battles.
  • Two minutes is easier with a song. Pick one and make it the brushing song.

You'll probably need it later — and when you're ready, we're right around the corner.
